GUODONG FU
Biography
I received my BA degree in Literature from Shandong University in China. Influence by family, my initial passion was to become a writer. However, I gradually realized the inevitable limitations of language. I found that certain areas of consciousness that cannot be touched with words can be touched with colors and images. So for me, art is just a tool. I use this tool to explore unknown domains of consciousness.
Artist Statement
I had been suffering from severe mental depression and chronic illness for a long time when I was younger. I have never been trained in painting. When I instinctively picked up the oil paintbrush, my initial motivation was only to heal myself. I found that in the world of colors and images, people can transcend the barriers of language, personality mask, persona, different opinions and rational thinking, and directly communicate with each other in the subconscious realm.
Perhaps the meaning of art is far greater than self-healing, but I started from here. I have been in contact with some people with autism and schizophrenia recently. There was an autistic patient whose parents told me that he had refused to communicate with anyone for more than twenty years. However, when I took out my phone to show him my paintings, I clearly saw the light in his eyes. He would nod and shake his head to tell me which painting he liked and which he didn't like. In fact, he has a pair of extremely critical eyes, and he knows in which paintings I am honest and in which ones I am not.
Art opens a mysterious channel to reveal the truth, challenge taboos, and transform suffering. The most beautiful thing of art is that no one knows where it leads.
